What is Oral Hygiene?
Oral hygiene is the practice of brushing, flossing and using other tactics to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. The objective is to control plaque, a bacterial film that sticks to teeth. If plaque is not removed regularly, it produces acid that causes tooth decay and irritates the tissue surrounding the teeth. The buildup of plaque, which leads to the growth of tartar on the gums, is a major factor in the development of gingivitis and advanced gum disease.
Oral Hygiene Best Practices
The following is a list of steps you can take to help keep your smile looking great and your body feeling its best.
- Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled brush at least twice a day and if possible, after meals. Brush your tongue, as well, to remove bacteria buildup. One brushing session should take two to three minutes.
- Floss between teeth at least once a day.
- Brush and floss gently to avoid gum irritation.
- See an experienced dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings.
- Ask your dentist for suggestions regarding additional oral care products, such as rinses.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months and after an illness.
- Take special care with dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures. Follow the proper maintenance and use the special cleaning tools that your dentist recommends.
- The ADA also recommends eating a balanced diet and limiting between-meal snacks.
