Hair Loss Shampoos: 4 Ingredients to Look For

Here’s an easy option for men and women who want to increase the health of their hair and reduce their rate of hair loss: Try hair loss shampoos.

But out of the hundreds of hair loss shampoos on the market, how do you find the right one for you?

It may take a bit of investigation, but there certainly is no lack of information about hair loss shampoos. There are numerous sources you can tap to learn about specific shampoos. Often these are in the form of research studies that can give you an idea of how well certain products work.

Other valuable sources of information are dermatologists and licensed cosmeticians. These professionals deal with hair loss conditions frequently and have had the opportunity to observe the effectiveness of a variety of shampoos.

In addition, a Google search will yield hundreds of products, complete with testimonials as well as small research studies.

As a result of all of this information, it’s easy to get confused.

But if you know what products have been shown to be effective in studies, you can make intelligent choices about which shampoos you would like to try.

There is at least one great thing about hair loss shampoos – they are relatively cheap. That means that although there is a maze of hair loss/regrowth methods, you can try lots of shampoos without causing too much damage to your bank account.

Here are some things to look for as you research hair loss shampoos:

** Surfactants

People feel good when their shampoos lather up nicely. Lather, however, is just for psychological effect.

For some reason we believe that the more lather a shampoo produces, the cleaner our hair must be getting. Baloney! The ingredient that causes lather is called a surfactant and does not have cleaning properties. Other ingredients in shampoos actually do the cleaning.

Moreover, surfactants are fairly harsh, and anyone who is experiencing excessive hair loss should avoid them. There are lots of shampoos out there without surfactants, and you should try those.

** Herbal Ingredients

The herb that has had the most success in hair restoration is Saw Palmetto. Shampoos with this ingredient are certainly worth a try.

For one thing, Saw Palmetto seems to inhibit the production of DHT in men, and DHT causes hair follicles to shrivel and close up.

Nettle and bay have also been helpful to some people. Shampoos that include these might help you as well.

** Essential Oils

These are concentrated oils that come from plants such as lavender. Oils have been used since ancient times to stimulate healthy hair and decrease the rate of hair loss.

We know we have a lot to learn from early medicine men and healers, and this may be another example of that.

** Tea Tree Oil

Many people swear by this ingredient, and there are several brands of it on the market. So popular are shampoos with this ingredient that you can find them at most any drugstore as well as at health product retailers.

(As an aside, tea tree oil has also been found to be effective in the prevention of head lice infestations.)

There are no definitive studies that demonstrate that shampoos can actually result in regrowth of hair that has been lost through what are called “permanent” conditions, namely heredity and hormones.

Early prevention is important, however, and experimenting with hair loss shampoos during the early stages may provide invaluable help in reducing the rate of loss.
