What are Cataracts How to get rid of Cataracts

Fearing Cataracts – Are They Dangerous

?

The eyes come with their fair share of problems and health concerns. One of the major ailments is cataracts. This happens with age; as the eye gets old the lens becomes weaker. Cataracts cause a cloudy spot on the lens or cornea and vision becomes blurry. The lens of the eye has become denser and loses the transparency it once had.

The first solution the eye doctor will give is surgery. Surgery is the only way to fix the problem; or so you have been told. They will wait until the cataract is big enough to remove with surgery. The whole left in the eye will be replaced with a plastic lens so you can see once again. This process is expensive and may only work for a short while before coming back in another area of the eye or the other eye. Read more…

Improving Eyesight Naturally: The Bates Method

The Bates Method was created by Dr. William H. Bates, an ophthalmologist. He graduated at Cornell University in 1881 and received his medical degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1885. He then entered a residency at Columbia University Hospital in New York. It was during this time that he first began to develop what is known as The Bates Method.

Dr. Bates started seeing a lot of patients with eye problems and became increasingly dissatisfied with conventional ophthalmological practices. He consequently began his own research into eyesight disorders. He had observed patients that had difficulty seeing both near and far which seemed to spontaneously change for the better, sometimes to the point of a complete reversal of these symptoms. This is when he started to create many vision improvement methods. He believed that anyone could see without the use of glasses. His methods were soon developed which taught the eyes ways to improve and heal themselves.

He specifically was interested in helping school aged children. He felt they could absorb more knowledge without straining their eyes. He soon learned that most bad habits as well as eye problems actually start in school age children. Children have a natural curiosity to learn new things. Unfortunately, when they are forced to learn material that has no interest to them, their mind gets tired and their eyes start to strain.

What to Look for in Your Laser Eye Surgeon

When it comes to laser eye surgery, everyone wants a top-notch professional. After all, your eyes are both delicate and intricate, and you want to ensure the surgeon who works on correcting your vision is fully qualified to carry out the procedure.

However, many prospective laser eye surgery patients don’t always know what type of criteria to search for when seeking a laser eye surgeon. That’s where a few tips and guidelines can come in handy.

When searching for an eye surgeon, most people tend to compile their initial pool of options based on cost, location, and quality of facilities. However, once you’ve narrowed your options based on these preliminary points, you’ll want to enquire about each surgeon’s qualifications and certifications.

Optometrists are not automatically qualified to carry out eye surgery – requiring extra certification – so it’s always important to check up on both academic and professional qualifications when researching surgeons. It’s also a good idea to enquire about the number of years each surgeon has been practicing – generally, three years or more is considered sufficient experience. You could also look for surgeons who are involved with specific groups and advisory boards such as the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) – a group that improves standards and initiative with regard to laser surgery practices. Astigmatism Contact Lenses

There was a time when people who had astigmatism couldn’t wear glasses but that was back in the 1980’s and times (and technology) have changed so much these days that this situation has become more ancient rumour or “matter of fact back in the old days” when astigmatism and contact lenses would never be used in the same breath.

The problem is that a “normal” shaped eye is like a perfectly rounded sphere where as the astigmatism affected eye is not shaped the same and can be more shaped like an egg (no, not a goose egg) which means its harder to focus and causes the vision to blur.

RPG (rigid gas permeable) lenses and Toric lenses for astigmatism help you correct this issue.

A toric lense basically have more than one lenses built into another (imagine your parents / grandparents bifocal glasses shrunk down and coming in the form of astigmatism contact lenses). Read more…

How to Insert and Remove Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are worn for corrective, therapeutic or cosmetic purposes. It is estimated that 125 million people wear these small convenient vision aids worldwide. However, as their popularity continues to rise, so does the frustration of inserting and taking out these vision aids. Nevertheless, there is a quick and concise way to learn this skill.

1. Before you insert the lens into your eye, you must thoroughly wash your hands, to prevent the transfer of bacteria from your hands to your eyes. Also, as a precautionary measure, lay down a clean towel to catch the contact lens if it accidentally falls off of your finger.

2. Next, place the contact lens in the palm of your hand, and use the solution that you are given to clean and lubricate the lens. Read more…

Epi-LASIK: A New Solution for Refractive Procedures

When most of us think of corrective eye surgery, we think of LASIK. As the most established refractive procedure, LASIK continues to be a popular choice, but ophthalmologists have also developed similar yet refined ways to address corneal imperfections. Epi-LASIK (epithelial laser in-situ keratomileusis), one of the most recent solutions, may be better option for some patients.

What Is Epi-LASIK?

As with traditional LASIK, Epi-LASIK involves the ophthalmologist creating a flap in the cornea. The eye surgeon then lifts the flap and uses a laser to reshape the cornea, correcting impairments and improving vision. Once the flap is put back in the place, the patient is fitted with a special contact lens to wear for a few days post-surgery.

How Does Epi-LASIK Differ from Other Procedures?

In Epi-LASIK, the eye surgeon uses a duller blade (rather than a sharp blade or laser) to create a flap in the cornea; this helps prevent the surgeon from cutting too deeply, which is a possible complication of other traditional LASIK procedures. Read more…

Processing Speed Therapy For Eye – Maintenance and Reading Fluency

Fluency in reading involves the ability to read words at an automatic pace and the speed and ease used while reading. There is a high correlation between reading words per minute and accuracy. If a child is reading slowly and sounding out each word, the meaning of the text will be lost. Reading must be rapid and automatic to glean meaning and understanding. If a text is on a child’s age and grade level the reading process should be automatic.

One common problem that causes slow reading is poor eye-position maintenance. A child must be able to fixate on a word long enough for recognition to take place. This problem can cause a child to take too long to read a word. A long duration time to recognize a word causes physical as well as reading fluency problems. The result of this problem may be: blurring, fatigue, nervousness, hyperactivity, rubbing or blinking the eyes. Reading problems may include: skipping words when reading aloud, slow reading, losing place while reading, reversals and avoidance of reading. The eye must focus on a word for approximately one-quarter of a second in the when reading. Processing training can increase the duration time of fixation on each word to one-sixth of a second, while still maintaining good recognition when reading. Read more…
